Members of Parliament on Thursday 19th August 2010 unanimously approved John Sahr Francis Yambasu as the new Ambassador to Russia replacing Dr. Salieu Turay while Oumar Farouk Sesay was approved as Chairman of the National Youth Commission (NYC) and Rev. Michael Samura, member of the Board of Trustees of the same Commission representing the Western Region.

Majority Leader of Parliament, who doubles as Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments and the Public Service, Hon. Sheku B.B. Dumbuya, recalled the pledges made by the three nominees and gave as example, that of the former Kono District Council Chairman, John Sahr Francis Yambasu, who pledged to uphold and maintain the good moral standards of Sierra Leone in Russia as well as work hard to improve the cordial relations existing between the two countries, especially in the area of education that several Sierra Leoneans benefited from in Russia.

Hon. Dumbuya further informed MPs that John Sahr Francis Yambasu is a Russian graduate in engineering also worked there before entering into private business and later national politics. During question time, John Yambasu described his nomination as a call to national duty and promised to live up to expectation as well seek the welfare of all Sierra Leoneans, regardless of political and regional affiliations.

Hon. Dumbuya also informed the House that Oumar Farouk Sesay, Chairman of the National Youth Commission (NYC), has a wealth of experience in youth activities, worked as a journalist and is a popular play writer; backgrounds he underscored, would put him in a good stead to implement youth programs in the country. On Rev. Michael Samura, Hon. Dumbuya described him as a resourceful individual who commands immense respect from youths he had worked with since 1985 as National Director of the renowned Boys and Girls Society.

Hon. Eric Komba Koedoyoma of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), who seconded the motion, in his contribution, commended President Koroma for nominating John Sahr Yambasu since he studied and worked in Russia and therefore au fait with that country.

Hon Koedoyoma described Oumar Farouk Sesay as a committed and intelligent young man and was optimistic that he would steer the mantle of leadership of the Youth Commission. Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Justice Abel Stronge, in his concluding remarks, reminded the appointees to put the interest of the country first and wished them all the best in their various national assignments.

Drivers & Bike Riders form union

A one-day consultative and planning meeting between the Sierra Leone Drivers Union and Bike Riders/Owners Association in Lungi has ended at the Masoila Community Centre, Lungi. The objective of the meeting was to resolve differences between the two factions as the latter creates employment for youths in the community. Sierra Leone Drivers Union Chairman, Foday Rashid Kamara, enlightened that the Bike Riders Association is an arm of the Drivers Union and that after consultations between the two parties, it was unanimously agreed that a management committee be setup to administer the affairs of both unions until elections are held and expressed appreciation to the Drivers Union executive for bringing the two Unions together. Secretary of the Drivers Association, Lungi Branch, Osman S. Kamara cautioned his colleagues to be very careful when electing officials to key positions as only members with integrity should be voted into office.
